What is substrate?
Substrate is a
material used to line the base of your terrarium and its job is to
absorb excess moisture from misting as well as capture waste debris in
the tank making it easy to spot clean.
Everyone has there
preference and recommendations, but you need to find something that works
best for you because a well maintained terrarium will result in a clean
home for your reptiles.
When choosing a
substrate to use you need to consider the type of look/setup you are
aiming for, I personally prefer the natural look. Not only can you
create something that looks great you are simulating your reptile’s
natural habitat.
Lets take a look
at some of the products available and talk about the alternatives.
The natural look.
Thankfully there
are a few companies out there producing some great substrates that work
well with Crested Geckos.
Here are two popular substrates
which you can purchase in our online store. They are only a few pounds
each and they will last a very long time.
Advantages:
Looks great.
Allows you to
create a more natural environment.
Easier to spot
clean.
Disadvantages:
Can be messy when
cleaning the terrarium.
Geckos will tend
to get a mouthful when diving for those tasty Crickets.
Cheap and easy.
If you are looking
for something that is cheap and easy to clean then look no further than
your kitchen. Plain, unscented kitchen towel makes a great substrate if
you’re looking for something that is low maintenance and easy to change.

When you fully
clean your terrariums all you need to do is remove the plants etc and
remove the towel and throw it away. After a good scrub down of the tank,
lay new sheets of kitchen towel on the base and mist. Misting the towel
will allow you to push down the edges and create a flat surface.
Advantages:
Cheap and easily
available.
Allows for more
regular cleaning.
Cleaning is easier
and less messy.
Disadvantages:
Does not look as
good.
Does not mirror
their natural environment. |
